Massachusetts General Hospital

Massachusetts General Hospital, usually shortened to Mass General or MGH, is a teaching hospital in the West End of Boston, Massachusetts, in the United States. It was founded in 1811, which makes it the third-oldest general hospital in the country, and it has room for 999 patients. MGH is the original and largest clinical teaching and research site of Harvard Medical School, and together with Brigham and Women's Hospital it founded the Mass General Brigham health system.

Nature Index (Springer Nature) puts MGH at No. 1 in its 2026 Research Leaders table for healthcare institutions, a ranking based on research output. Its 2025 Share in that table was 182.85, up 3.0% on 2024, from a Count of 1,108. Newsweek and Statista place it No. 5 in World's Best Hospitals 2026, a Top 250 list that gives extra weight to patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs).

According to Wikipedia, the hospital runs the largest hospital-based research program in the world, whose yearly research budget topped $1.2 billion in 2021. In October 1846 its Ether Dome was the stage for the public demonstration of ether anaesthesia, when surgeon John Collins Warren removed a tumour from a patient's neck without pain; the room still exists and is open to visitors. The first American hospital social workers were based at MGH, and its computer work in the 1960s produced the MUMPS programming language, later used widely for patient records and billing.
