All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Delhi (AIIMS)

India

The All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Delhi (AIIMS Delhi) is an autonomous public medical university in Delhi, India, under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. Its foundation stone was laid in 1952, when Rajkumari Amrit Kaur was India's Health Minister, and it opened in 1956 under the AIIMS Act of that year. It was the first of what is now a group of AIIMS institutes.

Brand Finance ranks AIIMS Delhi No. 6 in its Global Top 250 Hospitals 2026, a ranking that measures brand strength. The list compares 250 hospital brands from around the world.

The institute was first proposed for Calcutta but was built in Delhi after the Chief Minister of West Bengal, Bidhan Chandra Roy, declined. The 1956 Act gave it the status of an Institute of National Importance, and Wikipedia describes AIIMS as the premier health institution of India. Since AIIMS Delhi opened, 24 more institutes under the AIIMS name have been announced.
