Mandarin Oriental
Bangkok

Mandarin Oriental, Bangkok stands on the Chao Phraya River in the Thai capital and is managed by Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group. Opened as The Oriental in 1876, it is one of the first hotels built in Thailand.
La Liste's 2025 ranking of the ten best hotels in the world lists it at No. 7. Time Out's report notes that it was one of two Asian hotels on the list, together with The Peninsula Shanghai.
Wikipedia traces its modern story to 1881, when the Danish businessman Hans Niels Andersen bought the premises and built a new luxury hotel that opened in 1887 with 40 rooms. King Chulalongkorn judged it fit for visiting royalty after inspecting it in 1890, and the entourage of the future Tsar Nicholas II stayed in 1891. After the Second World War, when the Japanese Army used it as an officers' club, a partnership including the photographer Germaine Krull and the American Jim Thompson restored it.
