The University of California, Berkeley (UC Berkeley) is a public research university and land-grant institution in Berkeley, California, in the United States. Founded in 1868 and named after the Anglo-Irish philosopher George Berkeley, it was the state's first land-grant university and is the founding campus of the University of California system. It has more than 45,000 students in fifteen schools, among them the College of Engineering and the Haas School of Business.

ShanghaiRanking's ARWU 2026 places Berkeley No. 5, as in 2025. U.S. News & World Report ranks it No. 7 in Best Global Universities 2026-2027, after No. 6 the year before, and Times Higher Education puts it No. 9 in both its 2026 and 2027 World University Rankings. Time Out's report on the U.S. News list said Berkeley shows public universities can "still outgun the Ivies" on research.

Berkeley manages Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory for the US Department of Energy, and its federal research and development funding passed $1 billion in 2021. Its 32 libraries form the sixth-largest research library in the US by volumes held. Wikipedia counts 65 Nobel laureates among its alumni, faculty and researchers, and it was a founding member of the Association of American Universities.
