Sweden (the Kingdom of Sweden) is a Nordic state on the Scandinavian Peninsula that borders Norway and Finland. With 450,295 km² and 10.6 million people, it is the largest and most populous Nordic country and the fifth-largest country in Europe. Stockholm is the capital and largest city, and 88% of Swedes live in urban areas.

The 2026 edition of the World Happiness Report, published by the Wellbeing Research Centre at Oxford with Gallup and the UN SDSN, ranks Sweden No. 5, with a life evaluation score of 7.255. In the previous edition it was No. 4 with 7.345.

Sweden has been inhabited since around 12,000 BC, and a unified Swedish state formed in the late 10th century. It joined Norway and Denmark in the Kalmar Union in 1397 and left it in 1523. After entering the Thirty Years' War it built the Swedish Empire, which remained one of Europe's great powers until the early 18th century.
