Vienna
Austria

Vienna is the capital and most populous city of Austria and one of the country's nine states. Just over two million people live in the city and nearly 2.9 million in the metropolitan area, close to a third of Austria's population. It lies on the Danube at the eastern edge of the Vienna Woods, about 50 km from Bratislava.
The Economist Intelligence Unit ranked Vienna No. 2 in its Global Liveability Index 2026, with an index score of 97.1. Monocle placed it No. 5 in its Quality of Life Survey 2025 and No. 4 in 2026. Condé Nast Traveller (UK) readers voted it No. 9 in the Readers' Choice Awards 2025, with a score of 93.75; the magazine names its musical legacy as one of the biggest draws, along with tram rides, concerts, palaces, Wiener Schnitzel and Sachertorte.
The Romans founded a military camp called Vindobona on the site in the 1st century, and it gained Roman city rights in 212. The region later came under the Lombards and the Pannonian Avars, and from the 8th century it was settled by the Baiuvarii. Today Vienna is the cultural, economic and political centre of Austria and the most populous city on the Danube; the EIU tables show it at No. 1 in the 2023 and 2024 editions.
